Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
